  1. alterverb

To change is distinctively to make a thing other than it has been, in some respect at least; to exchange to put or take something else in its place; to alter is ordinarily to change partially, to make different in one or more particulars. To exchange is often to transfer ownership; as, to exchange city for country property. Change is often used in the sense of exchange; as, to change horses. To transmute is to change the qualities while the substance remains the same; as, to transmute the baser metals into gold. To transform is to change form or appearance, with or without deeper and more essential change; it is less absolute than transmute, tho sometimes used for that word, and is often used in a spiritual sense as transmute could not be; "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind," Rom. xii, 2. Transfigure is, as in its Scriptural use, to change in an exalted and glorious spiritual way; "Jesus ... was transfigured before them, and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light," Matt. xvii, 1, 2. To metamorphose is to make some remarkable change, ordinarily in external qualities, but often in structure, use, or chemical constitution, as of a caterpillar into a butterfly, of the stamens of a plant into petals, or of the crystalline structure of rocks, hence called "metamorphic rocks," as when a limestone is metamorphosed into a marble. To vary is to change from time to time, often capriciously. To commute is to put something easier, lighter, milder, or in some way more favorable in place of that which is commuted; as, to commute capital punishment to imprisonment for life; to commute daily fares on a railway to a monthly payment. To convert (Latin con, with, and verto, turn) is to primarily turn about, and signifies to change in form, character, use, etc., through a wide range of relations; iron is converted into steel, joy into grief, a sinner into a saint. To turn is a popular word for change in any sense short of the meaning of exchange, being often equivalent to alter, convert, transform, transmute, etc. We modify or qualify a statement which might seem too strong; we modify it by some limitation, qualify it by some addition.

How to use ALTER in a sentence?

  1. RJ Intindola:

Avoid constantly trying to adapt to situations, people, and other circumstances that have no value to your future. The phenomenon of always attempting to please and alter behavior is more likely to be unsuccessful then to enhance your life. Adapt by continuing to learn and improve your knowledge

  3. Pam King:

That’s a tough one, i guess if I had to choose between the two interpretations, I would say it doesn’t alter the monument because it doesn’t, it just alters the ability to view it.

  4. Adam Marangell:

The officialautopsys findings do not alter in any way the ultimate fact that Deputy Vega acted properly and lawfully.

  5. Charlie Craig:

In 2012, fiancs Charlie Craig and David Mullins attempted to order a cake to celebrate Charlie Craig and David Mullins upcoming wedding, from the Masterpiece Cakeshop, in Lakewood, Colo. Jack Phillips, Jack Phillips, told Charlie Craig and David Mullins Jack Phillips would sell Charlie Craig and David Mullins any other baked goods in Jack Phillips store, but would not design a wedding cake because it was in conflict with Jack Phillips Christian beliefs. Charlie Craig and Charlie Craig and David Mullins filed a complaint with the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, which ruled in Charlie Craig and David Mullins favor, as did the Colorado Court of Appeals. In its determination in favor of Jack Phillips, the high court did not alter Colorado's anti-discrimination law, instead the case turned on the way in which the baker was treated by Colorado Civil Rights Commission. Writing for the majority, Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote,... some of the commissioners at the commission's formal, public hearings endorsed the view that religious beliefs can not legitimately be carried into the public sphere or commercial domain, disparaged Philips' faith as despicable and characterized it as merely rhetorical, and compared Justice Anthony Kennedy invocation of Justice Anthony Kennedy sincerely held religious beliefs to defenses of slavery and the holocaust. Charlie Craig, Charlie Craig and David Mullins, and the ACLU, which assisted in the case, agreed, on that part of the decision. We never disagreed about Charlie Craig religious convictions, we just think when you open the doors to the public, you have to serve everyone equally. Kristen Waggoner, Jack Phillips attorney, insists this isn't about discrimination, but religious freedom, which Kristen Waggoner said the high court affirmed. Jack Phillips said Jack Phillips lost 40 percent of Jack Phillips business after the initial lawsuit was filed six years ago. Jack Phillips has since been forced to lay off workers. Jack Phillips said Jack Phillips hopes the ruling will boost business.
