  1. destroy

Abolish, to do away with, bring absolutely to an end, especially as something hostile, hindering, or harmful, was formerly used of persons and material objects, a usage now obsolete except in poetry or highly figurative speech. Abolish is now used of institutions, customs, and conditions, especially those wide-spread and long existing; as, to abolish slavery, ignorance, intemperance, poverty. A building that is burned to the ground is said to be destroyed by fire. Annihilate, as a philosophical term, signifies to put absolutely out of existence. As far as our knowledge goes, matter is never annihilated, but only changes its form. Some believe that the wicked will be annihilated. Abolish is not said of laws. There we use repeal, abrogate, nullify, etc.: repeal by the enacting body, nullify by revolutionary proceedings; a later statute abrogates, without formally repealing, any earlier law with which it conflicts. An appellate court may reverse or set aside the decision of an inferior court. Overthrow may be used in either a good or a bad sense; suppress is commonly in a good, subvert always in a bad sense; as, to subvert our liberties; to suppress a rebellion. The law prohibits what may never have existed; it abolishes an existing evil. We abate a nuisance, terminate a controversy. Compare CANCEL; DEMOLISH; EXTERMINATE.

    Synonyms:
abate, abolish, abrogate, annihilate, annul, end, end, eradicate, exterminate, extirpate, nullify, obliterate, overthrow, prohibit, remove, repeal, reverse, revoke, set aside, stamp out, subvert, supplant, suppress, terminate

    Antonyms:
authorize, cherish, confirm, continue, enact, establish, institute, introduce, legalize, promote, reinstate, renew, repair, restore, revive, set up, support, sustain

How to use destroy in a sentence?

  1. Fabio Silveira:

  2. Ken Thompson:

Wrongful convictions ultimately destroy the lives of the people who are wrongfully convicted, as well as their families, and also do great damage to the integrity of the justice system, the people of Brooklyn elected me to ensure that justice is done and that is what my decision to vacate Derrick Hamilton’s conviction reflects.

  3. Sebastian Gorka:

It was tough. We know he's tough because of the border issue and everything else, but yeah, it was internally inconsistent, when he talked about the attitude to our allies, to whether they should freeload or not, also when he talked about Russia and China, I was really disturbed. The things he said about how we can work with Russia and China, Russia is not on our side. The head of Russia is a former KGB colonel who wanted to destroy America. China is the world's most powerful communist nation so the idea, if you think we can work with these guys in meaningful fashion, I think history would prove you wrong. So it's an improvement. I have to be honest, it's an improvement, but it's still problematic and I need a more substantial development of his ideas in the next few weeks and months.

  4. Jennifer Horn:

It's not just the LGBTQ community this President targets. When we look at immigrants, people -- anyone that he thinks he can somehow use to anger his base -- he doesn't care if he has to divide on racial lines, on ethnic lines, on educational lines, he will divide and damage and destroy this country in any manner he thinks he needs to advance his own political power.

  5. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi:

We share Afghanistan's pain over persisting terrorism and extremist violence that destroy lives and derail progress.
