  1. lure

To allure is to draw as with a lure by some charm or some prospect of pleasure or advantage. We may attract others to a certain thing without intent; as, the good unconsciously attract others to virtue. We may allure either to that which is evil or to that which is good and noble, by purpose and endeavor, as in the familiar line, "Allured to brighter worlds, and led the way," Goldsmith Deserted Village, l. 170. Lure is rather more akin to the physical nature. It is the word we would use of drawing on an animal. Coax expresses the attraction of the person, not of the thing. A man may be coaxed to that which is by no means alluring. Cajole and decoy carry the idea of deceiving and ensnaring. To inveigle is to lead one blindly in. To tempt is to endeavor to lead one wrong; to seduce is to succeed in winning one from good to ill. Win may be used in either a bad or a good sense, in which latter it surpasses the highest sense of allure, because it succeeds in that which allure attempts; as, "He that winneth souls is wise," Prov. xi, 30.

How to use lure in a sentence?

  1. Daryl Davis:

When you've sat on that throne of power for hundreds of years and you see your throne legs being whittled down and now you're being lowered down to the level of the people that you consider inferior, it's really troubling and that's why you find a lot of these groups stepping up their recruitment efforts, and what they do is they use a legitimate topic in order to lure people in, the top of it being illegal immigration. That's the browning of America.

  2. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott:

It shows the lure, the lure of this death cult to impressionable youngsters and it's very, very important that we do everything we can to try to safeguard our young people against the lure of this shocking, alien and extreme ideology.

  3. Paranjoy Guha Thakurta:

You lure your users by giving something free, and once they've got hooked onto it, you gradually start increasing the prices, it's the classic way all kinds of monopolies work across the globe.

  4. Ailsa Henderson:

I don't think Labour are going to lure away any voters who have gone to the pro-independence SNP by being silent on the issue of the constitution.

  5. The UAW:

( AP Photo/Rainier Ehrhardt)( The Associated Press) Right-to-work laws mean workers at unionized plants do not have to join the labor organization. Haley, whose efforts have brought major investments from companies including Continental Tire and Boeing, recently went toe-to toe with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, which sought to organize 3,000 workers at an aircraft plant she helped lure in 2011 with a $ 450 million package of tax incentives. The union suspended its effort to organize the Boeing plant after a rocky start. Haley, who said at her January state of the union address that South Carolina has an international reputation for being a state that does n’t want unions, because we don’t need unions, we have been successful in attracting some of the world’s top corporate citizens and paving the way for expansion of the businesses we already have because our right-to-work law strengthens the direct relationship our employers have with employees, Haley said. Our best advice to The UAW is to ask the IAM about how South Carolina workers view unions.
